In fact, the first paragraph of the story was clearly an appeal from the narrator. He was asking for a more logical explanation of the entire event in which he killed his wife with an axe.
While there is nothing in the story that mentioned about how the narrator is tried in court for the charges of killing his own wife, the point that he is already awaiting his execution clearly suggests that there was indeed a trial that took place. Apparently, it is in that trial that the court is convinced that the narrator did kill his wife with an axe even if he originally intended to strike the cat with it. However, the story itself or the narration also gives a clear description of what actually happened as to why the axe is eventually used on the wife instead of the black cat. At one time, the narrator is filled with so much hatred for the cat that he takes a knife in order to dispose of the animal for good. When he raises his arm to strike the cat though, his wife prevents him from doing so. At this instance, the narrator’s deep hatred for the black cat is transformed into a great anger towards his wife. The combination of such anger and the lingering effects of alcohol have greatly clouded his judgment. Because of this, the narrator killed his wife as he is “goaded, by the interference, into a rage more than demoniacal” (Poe). As the text itself explains, it is possible for a husband to kill his wife if his judgment is already clouded due to the effects of alcohol.
